Phanes the Agender

28 Sept 202626 min

Phanes was the first born of all the Gods. This was a chaotic period, where nothing had been established or delineated from anything else. Chimeric creatures represented multiple bodies and forms in the same body. This is true of Phanes. Phanes is represented in a human form with great wings coming out the back, the heads of various animals protruding out of the chest and sides, and a great serpent coiled around their whole body.

They are also represented with multiple gendered natures. In these early days of the universe, gender had not been delineated either, representing a mix of traits wholly Queer to later viewers.

Phanes is agender, no meaningful concepts of gender apply to Phanes.

Phanes includes male and female attributes and names. Given the triads present in the Orphic cosmologies, it is entirely likely that Phanes represents male, female, and androgynous at the same time thus containing three gendered natures. They are able to successfully self-impregnate, and create beings without any second partner present. Beyond this Phanes is instrumental in the births of other Queer deities like Dionysos and Athena.
