Why do we use Our Words to Study Antiquity?

14 Oct 202629 min

This episode explores the significance of using our own words to describe sexuality and gender in the past.

First we are able to describe a much wider range of gender and sexuality when we use our own words to describe them!

Second we are able to add much needed nuance to the interpretive possibilities the records present.

Third there is a much greater visibility of sexuality and gender in Antiquity. We are somewhat able to disassociate our contemporary struggles and see how others experienced them in a different cultural lens.

It is important for us to be able to use our own words to describe different types of gender and sexual experiences in antiquity. Because Antiquity is a space where we're visible, we're able to use multiple valid interpretation to expand the interpretive possibilities thereby describing a much wider range of gender and sexuality in antiquity.
