Patroclus trades insults with Thersites until Achilles breaks it up with news that he will keep his oath with Queen Hecuba to make peace with the Trojans out of his love for her daughter, Polyxena. Hector, Troilus and the rest of the Trojan leaders arrive in the Greek camp to negotiate a possible truce. Diomedes leaves the gathering and Ulysses and Troilus secretly follow him to Calchas’s tent. Diomedes calls for Cressida, who comes out to meet him. Troilus and Ulysses watch as Diomedes flirts with Cressida, with Thersites mocking the whole scene from afar. Cressida tries to figure out a way to keep Diomedes satisfied without breaking her loyalty to Troilus. She offers him the bracelet Troilus gave her then tries to get it back but Diomedes won’t let her have it. She finally gives in and agrees to let Diomedes into her tent, bidding a sad farewell to Troilus, who has seen the whole thing from his hiding place. He rages in despair and disbelief as Ulysses tries to get him to leave.
