If you’ve spent any time online recently, chances are you’ve come across Neil the Seal. Whether he’s smashing
bollards, blocking traffic or taking an afternoon nap in towns across southern Tasmania, Neil has become an
unlikely international celebrity. But according to media scholar Dr Gemma Blackwood, Neil's popularity tells us
as much about us as it does about the seal himself. She joins us this morning to explain why one charismatic
marine mammal has become a modern folk hero.
Neil the Seal is a southern elephant seal who has become a recurring visitor to towns in Tasmania, regularly
making headlines by hauling himself onto roads, footpaths, gardens and even parked cars.
His adventures have attracted widespread media attention both in Australia and overseas, generating millions
of views across social media platforms. Neil has inspired memes, fan pages, merchandise and extensive news
coverage, becoming far more than simply another viral animal story.

Rather than simply being famous because he’s unusual, Neil represents something people increasingly seek in
