Next sitting week, the Victorian Parliament will receive the final report from the landmark Inquiry into Historical LGBTIQA+ Hate Crimes—a pivotal moment for justice, accountability, and healing in our state. Meanwhile, our community also came together recently to celebrate the incredible grassroots advocates, volunteers, and leaders nominated at the GLOBE Victorian Community Awards. To discuss what he’s seen, and what he’d like to see, is Aiv Puglielli, Victorian Greens MLC for North-Eastern Metropolitan Region and spokesperson for Equality.

Aiv is joining Saturday Magazine to discuss the upcoming report from the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into Historical LGBTIQA+ Hate Crimes (tabled next sitting week) and celebrate local leaders following the GLOBE Victorian Community Awards.

LGBTIQA+ Hate Crimes Inquiry: The inquiry investigated historical hate crimes, police responses, anti-LGBTIQA+ violence, institutional accountability, and redress for victims/survivors. Aiv and the Greens have pushed for clear, actionable recommendations: formal state apologies, restorative justice frameworks, dedicated cold-case resources, and mandatory hate-crime recording mechanisms.

GLOBE Victorian Community Awards: Celebrating grassroots achievements across community leadership, advocacy, sports, and business. Provides a upbeat counterweight to the sobering inquiry topic.

Greens Equality Platform: Pushing for legislative protections against hate speech/vilification, increased state funding for community-led peer support, and structural safety across public spaces.
