Queer Working Lives: Behind the Uniform | Duncan Lustig-Prean | Episode 2
From the makers of the award-winning podcast What, That Old Queen?!
What happens when the uniform you wear with pride becomes a place to hide who you really are?
In this episode of Queer Working Lives, Tom Marshman and Bernie Hodges meet former Royal Navy officer Commodore Duncan Lustig-Prean, whose dismissal because of his sexuality led him to become a leading campaigner against the ban on gay and lesbian personnel serving in the Armed Forces. From his early ambitions as an opera singer to his distinguished naval career and landmark legal battle, Duncan reflects on identity, belonging and the person beneath the uniform. Ducan is recognised for his outstanding work supporting LGBTQIA+ communities in services.
Presented by Tom Marshman and Bernie Hodges, with audio production by Bernie Hodges.
Queer Working Lives: Behind the Uniform
From the makers of the award-winning podcast What, That Old Queen?!
In this three-part podcast series, Tom Marshman and Bernie Hodges explore the experiences of LGBTQ+ people who served in the British Armed Forces, uncovering personal stories of identity, belonging, discrimination and resilience. Through intimate conversations with former service personnel, the series asks what it means to wear a uniform, what we conceal beneath it, and what happens when the institution you serve refuses to accept who you are.
Queer Working Lives was made possible with the support of all the project partners, Hartlepool Museum, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, RAF Museum, West Sussex Fire Service, Marlborough Productions and at Portsmouth Navy Museum. It would not have been possible without generous funding from the Arts Council and National Lottery Community Project Fund.
